PCC Doctoral Practicum Therapist Training Program

Mental Health and Wellness is proud to provide a 10.5 month practicum placement for therapists currently enrolled in clinical or counseling doctoral programs. Our program focuses on allowing trainees to experience  work in a college counseling center with a diverse student population. Pasadena City College’s Personal Counseling center has a long history of providing superior training that serves our student body by providing excellent mental health services.

Key areas of training include intake assessments for brief therapy, provision of brief therapy from an integrated model, crisis intervention, and psychoeducational outreach to the campus community. There may be an additional opportunity for leading group therapy on an as-needed basis. Trainees are expected to develop relationships with campus partners and to work across divisions to ensure services are provided with the best care in mind.

Our program partners with the Southern California Association of Psychology Training Programs (SCAPTP) and adheres to the deadlines listed there. For the 2025 application cycle, the deadline for submission of applications is February 21. We will notify candidates about interviews, and will conduct interviews in the weeks following. Notification day for SCAPTP match is April 7, 2025. For more information about our training program, please visit the SCAPTP website.

To apply, an applicant should submit the following:

- An updated curriculum vitae

- A cover letter detailing the applicant’s interest in the program and how past experiences might serve as an asset to the center’s program. This letter should also include how the applicant hopes the training year will help them grow in their professional and career goals.

- Two letters of recommendation, with at least one letter coming from a clinical supervisor who has experience with the applicant’s clinical skills

Each training year begins with a 2 week training prior to the start of the academic year, in which all therapists in training are mandated to attend. Training dates and times are sent out after trainees are matched with the placement. If a student is unable to attend training, they may be at risk of not being allowed to continue with the training year.
